CHENNAI, April 3: Considering plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) National General Secretary Umesh Dutt urged Government of India to take all the necessary steps to ensure proper rehabilitation, security and political rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

In a statement Dutta said that the relations between the two neighbours date back to the hoary past. The attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen should be stopped forthwith, he added.

The ABVP leader said that the Government should not sit idle while its citizens were being attacked. The student leader appealed to both the governments to resolve the issues amicably across the table. Such a step would consolidate the mutual relations between the two neighbours, he added.

The ABVP leader felt the need for an atmosphere in Sri Lanka for the Tamils to live without fear and lead a respectful life. The student leader urged the Sri Lankan Government to proactively take steps to alleviate the sufferings of the Tamils and ensure their safety. Lasting peace would return to Sri Lanka only when its government sincerely and honestly addressed the grievances of the Tamils of the North and Eastern provinces as well as the refugees living in India, Dutt said.

In case of failure on part of the Sri Lankan Government to act, the ABVP leader opined that the Government of India should initiate steps for improving the condition of the Tamil community.
