Lucknow, October 11: Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kanpur has suspended 22 students for a period ranging from one to three years after they were found guilty of ragging their juniors. The decision was taken by IIT’s Senate which is the apex decision body of the institute at a meeting held on Monday night.

The probe committee had found the charges to be true, and recommended the suspension of all 22 students. 16 students were suspended for three years and six students were suspended for one year. The suspended students will be able to resume studies only after their suspension period ends.

The senate however, decided against filing police complaints as that would have jeopardized the students' future career prospects. The punishment followed allegations by students who joined the institute this July that they were forced to strip by seniors. They filed a mass complaint in August.

This, despite the fact that based on English print media reports alone, compiled by the Coalition to Uproot Ragging from Education (CURE), there were 717 cases of ragging from 2007-13, which saw 71 deaths, 30 attempted suicides, 199 cases of injuries (81 of which led to permanent disability) and 128 cases involving sexual abuse.
