President Kovind inaugurates India Water Week 2017; Gadkari says 285 new irrigation projects will be implemented next year

New Delhi, October 11: Water has become a vital issue around the world. With no fresh water to quench the thirst of needy people, it’s important that the government takes a concrete decision on not wasting water. In a bid to observe the issue closely, President Ramnath Kovind inaugurates India Water Week 2017 yesterday in New Delhi. 

 

While at the event, he said the issue of water is becoming more critical in view of climate change and related environmental concerns. The President also urged for a localised water management approach which should empower village and neighbourhood communities and build their capacity to manage, allocate and value their water resources.

 

He said further that India uses 80% of water for agriculture and industries use 15%. In the years to come, the ratio will change soon. He also spoke on Namami Gange project, claiming it to be a good start. Other such projects should be launched as well. 

Speaking on the occasion, Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari said that 27 PMKSY projects will be completed by this year. He said 285 new irrigation projects will be taken up by next year to provide irrigation for 1 crore 88 lakh hectare of land. He also referred to the recent inauguration of Sardar Sarovar Project by PM Narendra Modi, which will provide water to over 4 crore people and help irrigate over 8 lakh hectares of land. 

 

The Minister said government is exploring the possibility of creating a large fund for inter liking of rivers. New ways of treating waste from water will also be found this year. Recycled water then could be used in NTPC power plants. The government has also proposed ‘National Ground Water Management’ improvement scheme, a world bank backed Rs. 6,000 crore scheme, for sustainable management of ground water. 

India Water Week’s 5th edition will also cover major components like water, food, energy security and sustainable development.
