UAE warns Qatar to stop supporting terrorism before World Cup

Dubai, October 11: Gulf crisis gets more heated again after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) verbally taunted Qatar and asked to stop supporting extremism and terrorism before hosting 2022 World Cup. Notably, UAE Foreign Affairs Minister, Anwar Gargash on Wednesday said that Qatar should not host the 2022 World Cup unless it changes its policies “supporting extremism and terrorism. 

UAE Foreign Affairs Minister Anwar Gargash warned Qatar amid the latest attack on Doha in a four-month long dispute in the region. On a twitter, he said, “Qatar’s hosting of World Cup 2022 should include a repudiation of policies supporting extremism and terrorism. Doha should review is record.”

Gargash tweeted saying, “Hosting World Cup 2022 should not be tainted by support of extremist individuals [and] orgs/terrorist figures.” “Review of Qatar’s policies a must,” he added.

Launching a severe attack on Doha, Gargash said that Qatar’s launching of an English-language website criticising the countries the UAE and its allies as “a futile way of dealing with its crisis.” “Qatar should refocus its efforts on changing its policy of supporting extremism and terrorism,” he added.

Importantly, in the month of June this year, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and several other nations cut ties with Qatar and imposed stringent economic sanctions on it over supporting extremism. On the other side, Qatar denied all their allegations saying that they never supported Islamist militants and Shi'ite Iran.

Later, Saudi and its allies issued a 13-point list of demands to end the rift on June 22 and gave Qatar 10 days to comply. However, earlier Qatar rejected to fulfill the demands. The controversial Qatar World Cup will take place Nov. 21-Dec. 18 in 2022.
