New Delhi, October 14: Keeping in mind diplomatic consideration, internal security situation, demographic changes in the country and duties of the central government towards its own citizens, the deportation of illegal immigrants including Rohingyas has to be dealt with only by the Centre as it is essentially an executive function said the Union Home Ministry on Friday at New Delhi.

 

The home ministry said that the questions regarding illegal immigrants need to be examined. He further added that these issues ought to be handled by the policy-making function of the executive.

On the government's decision to deport Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar, the Supreme Court decided to give a detailed hearing on November 21 after this the statement on deportation came from the Home Ministry. The SC on Friday asserted that there should be a balance between national interest and human rights as the issue involved national security, economic interests, and humanity.

The Rohingya people are from Rakhine State, Myanmar. There were around 1 million Rohingya living in Myanmar before the 2016–17 crisis. The majority are Muslim while a minority are Hindu. Described by the United Nations in 2013 as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world, the Rohingya population are denied citizenship under the 1982 Myanmar nationality law.
