Port Blair, October 2: The world is already suffering in pain after the massive earthquakes in Mexico. Fearing the same disaster, Andaman and Nicobar Islands also came to a stand-still after twin earthquakes surprised the small islands. The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago falls under a high seismic zone. According to the National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale hit the Andaman Islands at 6.19 pm, followed by another at 8.05 pm, yesterday.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the epicentre of the quakes was in the Andaman Islands region and occurred at a depth of 10 km. "It's quite a normal phenomenon. The earthquake was not so powerful as to issue a tsunami warning," said an officer of the National Centre for Seismology.

The last quake was also reported this year on September 5. The magnitude measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale occurred in the morning and hit 162 kms south-west of Port Blair. No casualties were reported even then. People living on the islands have come into consensus with the untimely quakes. However, such quakes indicate about the imbalance in the nature and people should stay more cautious.
