In September, WPI inflation diminished to 2.6 percent

New Delhi, October 23: As prices of food article including vegetables, eased, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) fell to 2.60 percent in September as compared to 3.24 percent in August 2017 which was four-month high. The WPI in September 2016 was 1.36 percent. Keeping 2011-12=100 as a base, the Wholesale Price Index for All Commodities for the month of September 2017 declined by 0.4 percent to 114.3 from 114.8 for the previous month.

 

On yearly basis, the inflation in food articles reduced to 2.04 percent in September, as against 5.75 percent in August as per the government data. Inflation in vegetable prices was 44.91 percent in August as compared to 15.48 percent in September.

The Non- vegetarian segment items like egg, meat, and fish saw the rate of price rise was 5.47 percent. While the Onion prices in September was high with 79.78 percent increase.

A minor increase in inflation was observed in manufactured products as compared to 2.45 percent in August to 2.72 percent in September. While the inflation cooled in fuel and power segment against 9.99 percent in August to 9.01 percent in September. While the pulses continuously observed deflation at 24.26 percent.

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) is the price of a representative market basket (fixed list of items used specifically to track the progress of inflation) of wholesale goods. Some countries like the Philippines use WPI changes as a central measure of inflation. But now India has adopted new CPI (changes in the price level of the market basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households) to measure inflation.
