Indian women boxers bagged thirteen medals in Balkan International Boxing Championship

Sofia, October 24: Indian women boxers continue to shine in the international sports arena. Notably, Indian women boxers bagged whopping eight medals including five gold, three silver and five bronze in the Balkan International Boxing Championship which was held in Sofia, Bulgaria which was concluded on Monday.

 

On the last day of the tournament, India’s Lalfakmawil bagged the gold medal in 81 Kg category, P. Basumatar and Meena won a silver medal in 57 Kg category and 54 Kg category respectively. Also, Jyoti and Nirmla won a bronze medal each in 64Kg and 81 Kg category.


Earlier, Netu was the first Indian women boxer to clinch a gold medal in the Balkan International Boxing Championship. Netu outclassed Emi-Mari Todorova of Bulgaria by 5-0 in 48 kg category in the finals and claimed the gold medal. While Shashi in 57Kg category defeated Italian Giordana Sorrentino and clinched the gold medal comprehensively.


In the 54 kg summit clash, the referee stopped the contest in the second round two against Biancamaria Tessari of Italy to hand Sakshi the third gold. On the other side, Neha Yadav in 81 Kg category registered a victory over Adrienne Juhasz of Hungary by -2 for the country’s fourth gold medal.


Unfortunately, Ankushita lost to Rebecca Nicolo of Italy in 64 Kg category and had to settle for the silver. Joy Kumari in 51 kg category, Anupama in 81 kg category and Sapna in 75 kg category narrowly tumbled out in the semi-final rounds to pick up a bronze each. Interestingly, the week-long tournament saw India's top 10 youth women's boxers compete with 49 others from 13 countries.
