CM Yogi announces naming of Cultural Centre after eminent classical singer late Girija Devi

Lucknow, October 26: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced the naming of the Cultural Centre at Varanasi after eminent classical singer late Girija Devi. The Chief Minister has said that 'Sanskritik Sankul', a cultural complex at Chowkaghat, will be named after Girija Devi. 

Giving this information, a State Government spokesman said that the chief minister has also issued instructions to conduct the last rites of the classical exponent with full state honors.

The chief minister expressed his condolences on the demise of Girija Devi and said the singer had helped in elevating the profile of Thumri during her lifetime.

The last rites of veteran Indian classical singer Girija Devi will be performed at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh today. Her mortal remains will be taken to Varanasi from Kolkata this morning and will be kept at her Chouka Ghat residence for people to pay their respects.

Girija Devi, the doyen of Banaras Gharana, was born in Varanasi’s Nati Imli area on May 8, 1929. She passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday following a cardiac arrest. She was 88.
