Uttar Pradesh police arrests 5 in connection with Swiss couple attack

Lucknow, October 27: The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested five persons in connection with the attack on a Swiss couple at Fatehpur Sikri on the outskirts of Agra. An FIR has been registered against unknown people in the case.

Secretary Home of the state Bhagwan Swaroop said, of the 5 arrested, 3 are minors. Agra police has submitted a detail report to the government about the incident. 

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has sought a report from the state government on the incident. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs met the Swiss couple, who was allegedly harassed in Agra, at the Apollo Hospital in Delhi, Yesterday. 

"I have just seen this. I have asked for a report from the State Government. My officers will reach them in the hospital," EAM Sushma Swaraj tweeted.

Taking the cognisance of the incident chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that culprit will not be spared. Expressing regret over the incident UP Police Director General Sulkhan Singh has said that police has lodged FIR. All five accused have been identified and arrested. FIR registered about the incident by the local police when Swiss couple refused to lodge the FIR.

Union Tourism Minister KJ Alphonse has written to the Chief Minister of UP Yogi Adityanath, expressing concerns over the incident. In his letter to Adityanath, Alphons has sought “fast” action against the culprits.

“A fast and speedy response in identifying and ensuring speedy action, including conviction of the guilty, would be reassuring, as also a good message of our efforts to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” the minister has written in his letter to the Uttar Pradesh chief minister.

“You would kindly appreciate that such incidents negatively impact our image and are detrimental to our efforts in promoting India as a tourism destination,” he added. 

According to news report, the incident took place on Sunday when the couple from Lausanne in Switzerland, Quentin Jeremy Clerc, 24, and his girlfriend Marie Droz, also 24 was chased and attacked with stones and sticks by a group of youths when they were strolling near the railway station at the Fatehpur Sikri.
