Hyderabad, October 28: For the first time in Telangana, the state got its Human Milk Bank. This milk bank aims to provide donor milk to neonates whose mothers can’t lactate. The Human Milk Bank was unveiled by Union Minister of State for Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Anupriya Patel at State-run Niloufer Hospital.

The human milk bank, which is part of the Mothers Absolute Affection initiative of National Health Mission (NHM) could store 12 litres of milk at a given point. The milk bank will run free of cost and no single rupee is collected by the mothers who come and donate or anyone for that matter.

The milk bank, set up by Dhaatri, a city-based non-profit organisation will help provide pasteurized human breast milk to premature neo-natal babies with the best possible nutrition for the survival and healthy development of the babies. There are mothers who produce milk in excess and on its part Dhaatri will do a screening of such mothers, express the milk and make it accessible to the babies in the ICU wards of Niloufer Hospital.

“We are yet to break the taboo amongst most mothers since this is still a new concept in our country but our lactation counsellors are making sure that they educate the women and help the many children who die due to lack of milk,” Payal Singh, Milk Bank Manager at Niloufer Hospital said.
