Islamabad, October 3: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been re-elected as the President of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as a part of its plan to make Sharif the Prime Minister again.

The party on Monday agreed to amend its Constitution after passing a resolution reposing its confidence in the leadership of Sharif. Nawaz Sharif has been elected for for four years. No other candidate filed nomination papers for the slot of the president.

This was announced by party's Chief Election Commissioner Chaudhary Jaffer Iqbal at the meeting of PML (N)'s central general council at the convention center in Islamabad today.

Earlier, Nawaz Sharif's wife and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Begum Kulsoon Nawaz has won the crucial Lahore by-election. The win is being seen as a test of support for the family after Sharif's ouster.

Nawaz Sharif was ousted as the Prime Minister by the Supreme Court on July 28 in the Panama Papers scandal. Pakistan’s Apex Court disqualified Sharif for not being honest and concealing assets. The probe against him began after his children were named in the leaked so-called Panama papers for owning off-shore accounts and properties.

The case, concerning allegations of money laundering by Sharif in 1990s when he twice served as Prime Minister to purchase assets in London, was launched on November 3, 2016, and the court held 35 hearings before concluding the proceedings on February 23 this year. The assets surfaced when Panama Papers last year showed that they were managed through offshore companies owned by Sharif's children.
