Five-time champion Viswanathan Anand finishes second at Isle Of Man Chess Championship

Douglas, October 3: Indian chess master Viswanathan Anand who is also a five-time world champion on Monday defeated Chinese grandmaster Hou Yifan in the ninth and final round to finish joint-second at the Isle Of Man Chess Championship in Douglas. Anand shared the second spot with United States of America's Hikaru Nakamura.

 

Notably, Anand played the game very confidently and took 53 moves to defeat Hou and finished at second spot after gaining 7 points. On the other side, World Champion Magnus Carlsen won the title with 7.5 points after a short draw against Nakamura to pocket a cheque for 50,000 pounds.

Vidit Santosh Gujrathi and Swapnil S Dhopade also shined in the chess tournament and finished at the joint third position with 6.5 points after playing out draws against Hungarian Richard Rapport and Ukraine's Pavel Eljanov respectively.

Other Indians including Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan, Swayams Mishra and SP Sethuraman did not do well in the tournament. Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan ended at the joint 13th spot with six points after signing a truce with Francisco Vallejo Pons. SP Sethuraman drew with compatriot Swayams Mishra to finish 48th with five points.

Dronavalli Harika and B Adhiban finished with wins over Evgeny Degtiarev and Nino Batsiashvili respectively. However, young prodigy R Praggnanandhaa also ended his campaign with a victory over Vilmos Balint.
