China Open: Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna storms into Quarterfinals in their respective categories

Beijing, October 4: Star Indian shuttler Sania Mirza and compatriot Rohan Bopanna on Tuesday stormed into the quarterfinals of the women’s and men’s doubles events in the ongoing China Open in Beijing. Sania and her partner Peng Shuai defeated the Belgian-Dutch pair of Elise Mertens and Demi Schuurs while Rohan Bopanna and his partner from Uruguay, Pablo Cuevas, registered a victory over the Chinese pair of Mao-Xin Gong and Ze Zhang.

 

In the women’s doubles, Sania Mirza and her Chinese partner Shuai Peng registered a comprehensive win over the Belgian-Dutch pair of Elise Mertens and Demi Schuurs by 7-5, 6-2 in a match that lasted for just over an hour. The Belgian-Dutch pair stood no-where in front of the third seed Sania and Shuai Peng’s attack in the clash. Sania and Peng Shuai had received a bye in their first round.

 

Meanwhile, India’s Rohan Bopanna and his partner from Uruguay, Pablo Cuevas defeated the Chinese pair of Mao-Xin Gong and Ze Zhang by 6-0, 6-4. The Chinese pairs had got the wildcard entry in the tournament. However, Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas will compete against top seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers to get a place in semifinals.

Earlier, in the month of September this year, Sania Mirza and her Chinese partner Shuai Peng showing up a gritty performance defeated Hungarian-Czech pair of Timea Babos and Andrea Hlavackova to enter in the semifinals of US Open but unfortunately lost in the finals.
