Pooja Kadian bagged India's first gold medal in Wushu World Championships

Moscow, October 5: Pooja Kadian created history on Wednesday as she bagged India's first ever gold medal at the Wushu World Championships in Russia. An ace CRPF Wushu champion, Pooja topped in the 75 kg women's Sanda category, defeating Russia's Evgeniya Stepanova in the finale.

Among other Indian winners, Rameshchandra Singh Moirangthem won a bronze medal in the men’s Sanda 48 kg category. Another Bronze medal from Bhanu Pratap Singh came in the men’s Sanda 60 kg category. Rajinder Singh also won a bronze in the men’s 90 kg category.

On his way to the medal, Singh had defeated Russia’s Bozigit Ataev 2-1 to progress to the semi-finals, prior to getting thrashed 1-2 by Iran’s Milad Arefi.

The last medal for India which came from Arunpama Devi Keisham who won in the 65 kg Sanda category in the women’s section after thrashing Switzerland’s Pricilla Staubli 2-0 in the last-eight clash. Currently, China leads the medal tally with 15 gold medals with Iran in second place with eight.

Wushu is a martial art derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. Wushu is one of the two umbrella words used to describe Chinese Marial arts, the other one being Kung-Fu. It is also a full contact sport and is governed by the International Wushu Federation. This official international Wushu competition sees many countries from around the world participating.
