Seoul, October 7: North Korea usually follows a trend of conducting its missiles around important anniversaries in the country. The coming week holds two important anniversaries including Kim Jong-il's ascent to general secretary and its ruling party's founding. Hence South Korea is closely monitoring the situation.

"The government is closely monitoring the situation, given the possibility of North Korea's provocations around the party anniversary," a presidential official was quoted by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency. "If the North makes another provocation, Seoul will sternly respond to it," the official added.

In addition to the upcoming anniversary week, Russian lawmaker Anton Morosov said Friday North Korea is preparing for a test fire which could hit US West Coast. The lawmaker attended a meeting with senior North Korean officials in Pyongyang.

"They are preparing for a new test of a longer-range missile. They even gave us mathematical calculations that they believe prove that their missile can hit the western coast of the United States," Morozov said.

Previously the US also mentioned of the close monitoring. "We watch North Korea very closely but we do not comment on intelligence,"  US Defense Department spokesperson Christopher Logan told.
