Indian mixed team won gold in World Archery youth championship

Rosario, October 9: Seeded ninth, Jemson Ningthoujam and Ankita Bhakat won gold medal beating Russia in the Final in the mixed team event in World Archery youth championship held in Argentina. This is India’s first world title at the youth championships after Deepika Kumari’s 2009 and 2011 victories.

 

Talking about the victory Bhakat said that she was initially feeling a little shaky but I shot very well and we won the gold but now she is happy. Her partner Ningthoujam said that our coach tried to encourage us both; he was shouting ‘we have to win’, ‘we have to win’, ‘we have to win’. The hard work has paid off and now we‘ll hear our national anthem” he added.


In the tournament, India defeated the favorites Korea in the quarterfinals to take on the Russia into the finals. This is India’s fourth gold World Archery Champion title. Deepika Kumari won the title two times in 2009 and in 2011. While before Palton Hansda was the first Indian who won the world championship in the compound junior women’s event in 2006.

Ningthoujam won a silver medal in Junior Men’s team event along with Shukmani Gajanan Babrekar and Atul Verma against Korea in the final.
