Heavy rain thrashes Bengal capital and surrounding areas on first working day of week

Kolkata, October 9: The new week in Bengal capital and surrounding areas in South Bengal starts with devastating heavy rain and gusty wind. The difficulties to run road transport and railway system timely has become a problem for office-goers. As per MET forecast, the heavy rain and wind may continue in next two days.

"A depression has formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining North Bay of Bengal and lay centered about 50 km southeast of Kolkata at 5.30 am today," the Met department said.

After Durga Puja, many schools also reopened on Monday but the on very first day after vacation students faced inconvenience.A famous school South Point dispersed due to heavy rain.Hence the traffic in Gariaht crossing, one of the important crossings in the city is running slow. 

Many important areas got waterlogged leading to disturbance in normal traffic. Due to heavy wind, several trees broke down in Kolkata and neighboring areas. Branch of the broken trees is also obstructing traffic in several areas. A signal post also broke down in the city.

Other than Kolkata, districts like Burdwan, South and North 24 Parganas, Purulia, Bankura also faced heavy rain. Stormy wind of 30-40 km per hour also passed. The fishermen have been told not to go to sea in this bad weather condition.
