Gaza, November 1: A significant reconciliation move comes in Gaza as Islamic militant group Hamas on Wednesday handed over control of Gaza's five border crossings to Palestine authority. This move is highly significant for the conflict-torn region of Palestine. This move has come as part of a reconciliation deal. This handover is first in a decade.
These borders facilitate the movement of cargo and people in and out of Gaza. "From now on, we have no relationship with crossings and our employees are not present inside them," Mohammed Abu Zaid, the Hamas-appointed director of crossing points.
In 2007 Hamas seized control from the Fatah-led forces of the Palestinian Authority. After a decade they have handed over the control indicating a new peaceful era in Gaza. "We finished the first phase of the reconciliation with excellence," Hamas's top leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, said.
