Japan PM Abe, Russian President Putin discuss Kuril islands issue, N Korea tension on sidelines of APEC

Danang, November 11: Vietnam’s Da Nang is witnessing various deals, treaties, agreements, talks right now on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met and held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. As expectedly, disputed island and North Korea issue was high on agenda.

Shinzo Abe, who recently saw a huge victory in Japan lower house election, was congratulated by Russian President Putin. On an optimistic note, Russian President said, “I hope this will help us implement all our plans.”

A longtime issue regarding the Kuril Islands is haunting the countries. Recently, chose 5 areas, including seafood farming, as priority projects to continue in the disputed islands. “We’ll advance step by step toward resolving the issue concerning the sovereignty of the four islands [in the northern territories] and concluding a peace treaty” to formally end the dispute, Abe told.

The talk also touched North Korea issue. “On North Korea, we have agreed to implement U.N. sanctions strictly and to continue cooperating closely,” Abe told. Since a long time, Japan emphasized that Russia’s help is very much needed for North Korea issue.
