Transgender Ganga Kumari creates history: First to be appointed in Rajasthan police

Jaipur, November 14: Historic isn’t it! Transgender Ganga Kumari has become Rajasthan’s first police constable from her community. Notably, the Rajasthan High Court on Monday gave a historic verdict of appointing transgender Ganga Kumari as a constable in State police force. Ganga Kumari is Rajasthan's first but India's third transgender person to join a state police force.

 

Justice Dinesh Mehta of Rajasthan High Court while terming it a case of gender bias in historic verdict asked the police force to provide an appointment to Ganga Kumari within six weeks from the date of order along with the notional benefits from the year 2015.

Ganga Kumari, a resident of Raniwara in Jalore district of Rajasthan could have easily been India’s first transgender police constable as she was selected in the police recruitment examination, conducted in the year 2013 but her appointment was held up following the medical examination.

However, challenging her rejection, Ganga Kumari moved to HC stating that despite being eligible, the Jalore police refused to appoint her as constable. She fought the case for two years to claim her right to wear the uniform and serve the nation in the state police force.

BACKGROUND:

Ganga Kumari, who was 22 years of age in 2013 applied for the vacancy of constables in Rajasthan state police. Ganga successfully cleared the written and physical exam in March 2015. But medical examination report revealed that she was a transgender, her file was transferred to the police headquarters in Jaipur, and later to the home department. When she realized the police officials kept delaying their decision, she knocked the doors of the Rajasthan High court in December 2015.
