Mumbai, November 14: With the changing lifestyle of this new era, types of diseases are also changing. Obesity, diabetes and such diseases related to lifestyle problem are becoming more prevalent. Moreover, in middle- and low-income countries diabetes prevalence has been rising. On World Diabetes Day, let’s take a quick overview of diabetes and needed preventive measures.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body's systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.

Harmful consequences of diabetes:

The main problem chronic diabetes patients have to face after a certain time is that they get attacked by several other complicated diseases. Adults with diabetes have a two- to three-fold increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Even it does not leave your eyes or kidneys alone. Blindness can be one of the worst side effects of diabetes. This comes as a result of long-term accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. 2.6% of global blindness can be attributed to diabetes. Kidney failure from diabetes is also very common one

Major reasons for diabetes:
First, we need to know causes of a disease to prevent it. Though there are no specific causes for it, there are some reasons to catalyst it. Type I can be caused by Viral or bacterial infection, Chemical toxins within food, unidentified component causing the autoimmune reaction. The causes of Type 2 diabetes are very much related to lifestyle include Obesity, living a sedentary lifestyle, bad diet.

Lifestyle change:

Doctors obviously come as a savior to such diseases but there are some simple home remedies that could also prevent it. Simple changes in lifestyle can be on the preventive measures:

People should achieve and maintain healthy body weight; be physically active – at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight control; eat a healthy diet, avoiding sugar and saturated fats intake; and avoid tobacco use – smoking increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Say no to these foods:
Nowadays people consume outside foods very often. But it should be remembered our favourite beverages, pizzas, high carb and high sugar foods can worsen the situation badly. Sugar-Sweetened Beverages, Trans Fats. White Bread, Pasta , Fruit-Flavored Yogurt, Sweetened Breakfast Cereals, Flavored Coffee Drinks, Dried Fruit, Packaged Snack Foods, French Fries are really big-no foods for diabetic patients. Drinking alcohol also can be harmful as it can ibcrease blood-sugar level.
