Kolkata receives heavy rain, rainfall is likely to increase; experts fear rise in Dengue

Kolkata, November 16: While people are preparing to take out sweaters, blankets in Kolkata, now they have to use their raincoat. From Wednesday city of joy is experiencing continuous downpour. As per forecast, Thursday in Kolkata will receive heavier rain than Wednesday due to depression in the Bay of Bengal. But the weather condition has raised the concern among doctors as the city is already facing Dengue. The experts fear again that the mosquito-breeding may increase in logged water.

As per forecast from Alipoor meteorological Office, the depression is likely to be stronger and will cause heavy rain until Friday. Districts including Kolkata, two 24 Parganas, Midnapore, Howrah, Hoogly are likely to receive heavy rainfall. Kolkata is already under severe Dengue threat and one of the worst dengue-attacked districts.

"Since the temperature is yet to drop sufficiently, light rain could cause a spurt in cases. The virus is still active and the mosquito breeding cycle could be activated again by the rain. Had it rained heavily, the larvae would have got wiped out," said Arindam Biswas, consultant, general medicine at RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences.

A top official from Kolkata Municipal Corporation Atin Ghosh also expressed his concern. He said the rain has increased the dengue fear more. The situation can lead to the accelerated mosquito-breeding cycle. He said Corporation is on high alert but he also urged citizens to be more careful.
