China Open: PV Sindhu storms into quarterfinals round while Nehwal, Prannoy bowed out

Shanghai, November 16: The world number 2 and Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Thursday sailed into the women's singles quarterfinals stage of China Open Super Series Premier which is being held in Shanghai, China. Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy crashed out of the tournament.

 

The only shuttler PV Sindhu remaining in the China Open defeated Chinese Han Yue who is just 17-year-old by 21-15, 21-13 in a match that lasted for an hour. Sindhu was comfortable against her opponent and clinched points at every interval. On the other side, Han Yue tried to make a comeback with her skills but it was Sindhu who finally won the match.

Sindhu will take on another Chinese qualifier Gao Fangjie for a place in the semifinals on Friday. Earlier, in the opening round, Sindhu defeated Sayaka Sato of Japan by 24-22 23-21. On the other side, Prannoy lost to Hong Kong’s Cheuk Yiu Lee 19-21, 17-21 in a match that lasted just 42 minutes while Saina went down to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi 18-21, 11-21.

On day 1, in men's doubles, the Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost to Chinese pair of Cheng Liu and Nan Zhang by 13-21, 13-21. Sourabh Verma also lost in the men's singles first round to France's Brice Leverdez 14-21, 15-21, 11-21. While in the women's doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost 14-21, 15-21 to Ha Na Baek and Chae Yoo Jung of South Korea in the round of 32.
