Nation remembers former PM Indira Gandhi on her 100th birth anniversary

New Delhi, November 19: The nation is paying homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 100th birth anniversary. A commemorative programme to mark the anniversary of Gandhi will be held at Shakti Sthal. Congress party is organizing a cultural programme at Nehru Park in New Delhi this evening.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to former Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary. “Tributes to former PM Mrs. Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary.”, the Prime Minister said.
Congress scion Rahul Gandhi has remembered his grandmother for her love and happiness. "You are my mentor and guide. You give me strength," tweets Rahul.

Operation Blue Star is also evidence of the Indira Gandhi's firm mindset. Operation Blue Star was an Indian military operation which occurred between 1 June and 8 June 1984, ordered by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in order to establish control over the Harmandir Sahib Complex. The operation resulted in the death of Bhindranwale and a high casualty figure among the army, civilians and militants. The assault on Golden Temple was heavily criticised by Sikhs worldwide and had led to several Sikhs resigning from administrative positions. 
But the emergency period was the most painful era after independent era. in 1975, India saw its darkest phase since Independence when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi called for an emergency to be declared across the country. Arguably the toughest time for the citizens of the country, the emergency was issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352(1) of the Constitution. They termed it as "internal disturbance" that lasted 21 long months beginning 25th June 1975 and going on until 21st March 1977. Here are some facts and pictures from the emergency period.
