New Delhi, November 2: Ajay Bisaria, currently the Indian ambassador to Poland, has been appointed as nation's top envoy to Pakistan. He had, earlier, held the position of Private Secretary to the Prime Minister from 1999 to 2004.

The External Affairs Ministry said this in a statement last night. Bisaria, a 1987-batch IFS officer, will succeed Gautam Bambawale, who was posted to China last month. MEA further said “Bisaria is expected to take up his assignment shortly.”

Ajay's posting comes at a time amidst India-Pakistan bilateral ties following a series of terror strikes in India, including Uri and Pathankot attacks, by Pakistan-based terror groups.

The high-level diplomatic reshuffle took place after India’s ambassador to China Vijay Gokhale was appointed economic relations secretary at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

Gokhale reportedly played the lead role in defusing the recent Doklam crisis between Beijing and New Dehli.
