Itanagar, November 20: Over 130 species of butterflies was found during the 2nd Butterfly and biodiversity meet organized at Pasighat in East Siang District. A team of environmentalists including entomologists and wildlife experts have recorded these species of butterfly.

The meet was organized on November 18and 19 by the State Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation, an NGO, in collaboration with the environment and forest department and the East Siang Homestay and Tourism Association. This meet attracted many butterfly lovers as well as nature lovers. The team had conducted survey on butterfly species in the natural vegetation in the foothill areas near Pasighat town.

The NGO, which has doctors, engineers, professors, academicians and photography enthusiasts as its members, had started the meet at Pasighat and Mebo in October last year. The changing environment was a threat for the future generation. Therefore, the initiative has been taken to encourage youths to "develop friendship with nature and conserve it".

"It is every individual's duty to preserve nature. Butterflies and birds are sensitive indicators of climate change," Joram Khopey, coordinator of the organisation, said.

India, one of the most biodiverse nation with number of extinct species of animals, birds etc plays an important role in balancing nature. Also Arunachal Pradesh is the state with largest densely forest cover in India. Siang valley, adjacent to Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve, is suitable habitat of a variety of butterflies. The natural flora endowed with evergreen forests and angiosperms and perennial streams support comfortable survival and natural breeding of the winged species.
