US troops in Japan banned from alcohol consumption across the country

Tokyo, November 20: Following a fatal crash over the weekend, the anti-US base sentiment was rising high in Japan. From now all US army personnel stationed in Japan are banned from consuming alcohol. One US military servicemen crashed his truck killing a local and later it was proved the marine was drunk.

The place of the accident is in Okinawa region which hosts more than half of US troops in Japan. After the accident, local people were getting furious against US bases. In addition to that, local people already have dissatisfaction over large US military presence over there.

"When our service members fail to live up to the high standards we set for them, it damages the bonds between bases and local communities and makes it harder for us to accomplish our mission," a statement from US military said.

Due to anti-base sentiment, the US personnel have also been restricted to travel and have been advised to stay in their base and home. Whereas the statement did not totally accept the drink and drive fact but mentioned alcohol may have been a factor.

Tokyo made an immediate complaint to the US for stricter discipline. "It is extremely regrettable that this accident happened even though the Japanese government has repeatedly asked them for the thorough implementation of preventive measures and enforcement of disciplines," Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga said.
