Big diplomatic win for the nation: Indian nominee #DalveerBhandari re-elected as ICJ judge

New York, November 21: India’s contribution to the global platform again has been recognized as India’s nominee to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Dalveer Bhandari was re-elected to the 5th and last seat of ICJ. Britain withdrew its candidate from the election making the way easier for Bhandari.Dalveer Bhandari did not win only but also he secured all the 15 votes in the Security Council. In General assembly, he received 183-193 votes and he got nearly two- thirds of the votes there in 11 rounds of voting. The voting clearly indicates the political influence of India on international powers.The elections were held separately in New York office of UN.
This is for the first time since ICJ’s establishment there will be no British Judge. Justice Bhandari and Britain's Christopher Greenwood were having a tough competition. But in a dramatic turn of events, the British Permanent Representative to the UN, Matthew Rycroft said that its candidate Judge Christopher Greenwood had decided to withdraw from the election to the 15-membered ICJ. It is very significant that for the first time a permanent member at UN lost to a non-permanent member.
On the big win of India, India’s permanent representative to UN Syed Akbaruddin said how Foreign Ministry officials dedicatedly put hard effort to ensure the win. He also said this a huge diplomatic victory for India. Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj in a tweet expressed her happiness, “Vande Mataram - India wins election to the International Court of Justice. JaiHind,” she wrote.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday credited the efforts of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and MEA officials for the re-election of Dalveer Bhandari to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
He also expressed gratitude to members of the United Nations General Assembly and the U.N. Security Council for “their support and trust in India.”
“Congratulations to EAM @SushmaSwaraj and her entire team at MEA & diplomatic missions for their untiring efforts that have led to India’s re-election to ICJ.
” Our deep gratitude to all the members of UNGA as well as UNSC for their support and trust in India,” the PM tweeted.
He also congratulated Justice Bhandari on his re-election to the ICJ. “His re-election is a proud moment for us,” Modi said.
