After coalition talks fail, German Chancellor Angela Merkel favors re-election

Berlin, November 21: For leading a minority government, new elections should be preferred said the German Chancellor Angela Merkel after a breakdown in alliance talks pushed the country into political crisis. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that Germany is facing the poorest governing disaster in the 68-year history of its post-World War II democracy.

 

According to the local media, Merkel also said she did not see any reason to quit from her post despite the unsuccessful talks. The talks were withdrawn by the FDP liberals between Merkel’s CDU/CSU bloc and the Greens on Sunday. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier insisted them to make compromises for Germany's welfare; in a situation he said was unprecedented.

In a period of 12 years, this is the biggest challenge ever faced by the Merkel as a Chancellor. She said that new elections would be the better path but she was very uncertain about a minority government, she added. The elections were held in late September.
