Cairo, November 24: A mosque in Sinai region of Egypt was bombed and gun attacked today which took lives of 184 and more than 100 were injured. The al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abed, near al-Arish, was targeted.

One of the worst terror incidents in Egypt in years - targeted supporters of the security forces attending prayers there, two eyewitnesses and a security source said. Militants in four off-road vehicles approached the mosque as Friday prayers were finishing and opened fire at worshippers, a military source told.

A health ministry spokesperson initially said that 75 people were killed but after that 80 more were added to the death toll. More than 50 ambulances ferried casualties from the scene to nearby hospitals after the attack on the mosque.

While no claim of responsibility has yet been made, Egypt has been fighting a vicious Isis-affiliated insurgency in the Sinai since 2014. Extremism there has flourished in the chaos that has engulfed the country since the 2011 revolution.
