SC allows withdrawal of four more CRPF companies from Darjeeling and Kalimpong

Darjeeling, November 27: Though still now any permanent solution has not been chalked out, the situation in Darjeeling and surrounding area are nearing normalcy. In October, the Centre had decided to withdraw 10 of the 15 companies of paramilitary forces but faced strong opposition from the state. The Supreme Court today permitted the Centre to withdraw four of the eight companies of Centre Armed Paramilitary Forces (CRPF).

 
When in the earlier part of this year Gorkha Janmukti Morcha started violent agitation with the demand of the Separate state, paramilitary forces were deployed in the hill area of Bengal. On 15th October Centre sent a letter to state telling that it will withdraw 7 CRPF troops and three SSB troops on 16th October. But Bengal government got disappointed and moved to High Court seeking a stay on the order.

Earlier on 27th October overturning the Calcutta High Court Judgment which stayed the center’s order of withdrawal, allowed Centre to withdraw 7 of the 15 companies of CRPF. Now on Monday following the footprint of previous judgment SC allowed to withdraw fore forces from eight forces. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra passed the order.

When Centre ordered to withdraw forces from Darjeeling, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stubbornly opposed the decision. She blamed Central for playing “dirty politics” in Darjeeling and for helping to continue the agitation. But Central gave justified reason to withdraw the force as the region was already getting back to normalcy and now local police can take over. In addition to that Centre needs force for Gujrata and Uttarakhand election and for internal security in Jammu and Kashmir.
