Indian contingent clinched five gold medals at World youth women boxing championship
Guwahati, November 27: Indian contingent showing up a dominating performance at the World youth women boxing championship which is being held in N.C. Bordoloi Indoor Stadium and clinched five gold medals as all the five boxers registered a comprehensive victory in their respected final matches.
Notably, Haryana quartet of Nitu in the 48kg category, Jyoti Gulia in the 51kg category, Sakshi Chaudhary in the 54kg category and Shashi Chopra in the 57kg category and Assam girl Ankushita Boro in 64kg category won their respected final matches and clinched gold medals.
Nitu was the first to bag gold medal after defeating Kazakhstan's Zhazira Urakbayeva by 5-0 in the 48kg category. Exhibiting marvelous performance in the ring, Nitu mixed her combinations with left shots to seize the initiative. She launched effective counter-attacks in the final two rounds to register a victory.
Meanwhile, Jyoti Gulia registered a commanding 5-0 win over Ekaterina Molchanova in the 51kg category. Jyoti executed her plan well and won her final match easily. Jyoti also qualified for next year's Youth Olympics.
World junior champion Sakshi also earned another gold medal after she outclassed Ivy-Jane Smith 3-2. Sakshi's fluid footwork and left-right attack held her in good stead against the English counter-puncher. However, presenting a tight guard and well-directed jabs, Ivy-Jane gave Sakshi a tough time before settling for the silver.
On the other side, Shashi also managed a 4-1 win over Vietnamese Hong Do. Shashi missed her fluent game as she became watchful, but stuck to her trademark 'distance punching' against the compact Vietnamese, who delivered some solid blows. In an entertaining final, Ankushita defeated the powerful Russian Ekaterina Dynnik 4-1 to the delight of local supporters. Ankushita was adjudged the 'best boxer' of the event.
India's success was unprecedented as it secured five gold and two bronze to take the top spot. Earlier, India bagged two gold medals through Sarjubala Devi in the 48kg category and Minu Basumatary in the 64kg category at the inaugural edition in Antalya, Turkey, in 2011.
