#NTPC blast: Ex-gratia hiked from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 20 lakh; death toll rises to 32

Lucknow, November 3: Union power minister RK Singh stated that a compensation of Rs 20 lakh will be provided to the kin of those killed in a boiler explosion at NTPC’s Unchahar plant in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the mishap has risen to 32. A magisterial probe has been ordered by the state administration into the incident, while the Centre has also constituted a probe team headed by the NTPC executive director.

Talking to media at Unchahar after visiting the incident site and meeting with injured, Singh said, the committee has been asked to complete probe within 30 days. He said, working and efficiency of machines set up in the NTPC plant by BHEL will also be probed.

After meeting with the victims` family members at hospitals he has said that all possible medical help will be provided in treatment of injured. District Magistrate Raebareli has constituted team of Magistrate and Technical Officer to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Gulam Nabi Azad also visited the hospitals and incident site and met the family members of the victims and officials of the plant. Both the leaders have demanded an impartial probe into the incident.

Meanwhile, National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to UP government over blast in the NTPC's Unchahar plant resulting in death of many people and injury to others. Taking cognizance of media reports, the Commission has sought detailed report form state Chief Secretary within six weeks.

NTPC operates a 1550 Mega Watt power plant of Uttar Pradesh, which is named after Feroze Gandhi, husband of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
