Voting for Panchayat elections held in Sikkim begins

Gangtok, November 3: The Voting for Panchayat elections have been started in Sikkim on Friday. For 500-gram panchayat and 84 Zilla panchayat seats, more than 2 lakh people across the state are expected to exercise their voting right. 16 out of 849 polling booths have been declared active in the region of south Sikkim.

 

To ensure the free and fair polls police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the states. According to the local media, until 12 pm the total number of Voters turnout at South District is 35003 with a percentage of 40.52 percent and 74 percent voting recorded in North District. Voting in all 305 polling stations is going on smoothly and uninterrupted in West Sikkim.

On 23rd September, Sikkim State Election Commission declared the date for the upcoming Panchayat Election that the General Elections of all Zilla Panchayats and Gram Panchayat wards of Sikkim will be held under the rule 14 of Sikkim Panchayat (Conduct of Election) rules 1997.
