Begusarai, November 4: On the auspicious occasion of Karthik Purnima, Bihar received a bad news from Begusarai. A stampede on the banks of the Ganga in Bihar’s Begursai has taken away three lives while has injured several others. The crowd gathered for a holy dip on the occasion. The place of the incident Simaria ghat is 100kms away from Patna.

Though the history of the stampede is not new in India due to poor crowd management, government’s intervention and enhanced security have recently lessened the frequency. The Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar has expressed his grief over the unwanted incident and announced a compensation of Rs four lakh to each victim's family. He also instructed officials for free medical aid.

There is no available information on why exactly the stampede happened but the local media reports say extreme crowds and a stampede may be to blame for the deaths. After the accident footwear and personal belongings scattered on the ground.

Officials of local police have confirmed the incident but denied stampede. “The victims, all women, were more than 80 years old and were apparently very weak. It appears they died of suffocation after being stuck on a narrow lane that was being used by a large number of pilgrims for going to and returning from the ghat,” Begusarai superintendent of police Aditya Kumar said.
