From North Korea to free trade, US President Trump’s Japan visit touches various issues

Tokyo, November 6: US President Donald Trump has met both Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe and Emperor Akihito on his first leg of Asia visit. From free trade to North Korea, various issues have been touched by this visit. Trump and Abe both the leaders agreed to put the maximum possible pressure on North Korea while Trump expressed his dissatisfaction over Japan’s role in free trade.

After a joint summit of Abe and Trump Abe announced Japan will expand its unilateral sanctions on North Korea, freezing the assets of 35 more North Korean individuals and entities. Trump also reassured to stand with Japanese people against North Korea menace. Japan PM Abe also emphasized on Japan-US co-operation to make North Korea change its policies.

US President met Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the Imperial Palace. "Although the two countries have a history of fighting each other in war, Japan has become what it is now thanks to the friendly relationship afterward as well as support from the United States," the emperor said.

Donald Trump also met the families of nationals abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s at the Akasaka Palace state guesthouse in Tokyo. He also heard stories about (abducted) family members -- daughters, wives, brothers, uncles, and fathers.

As Japanese local media reported, U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday accused Japan of not conducting "fair and open" trade with the United States.
