Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia to be new Finance Secretary

New Delhi, November 7: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has designated Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia as the new Finance Secretary. The vacancy was caused following the superannuation of Ashok Lavasa last month.

Adhia is a 1981 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre. As per the convention, the senior most Secretary in the Finance Ministry is designated as the Finance Secretary.

As Finance Secretary, Adhia will have to closely work with the five departments of the Finance Ministry — Expenditure, Economic Affairs, Financial Services, Revenue and Department of Investment and Public Asset management (DIPAM).

Prior to the current posting he was Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India for the period from November, 2014 till August, 2015. As Secretary, Financial Services, he is credited with many new strategies for banking reforms such as Gyan Sangam and Indra Dhanush as well social security schemes of Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna, Jivan Jyoti Bima Yojna and Atal Pension Yojana, as also for the scheme of micro-financing of Mudra. Earlier, he worked at the State level in Government of Gujarat as Additional Chief Secretary, Finance Department, Principal Secretary (Education), Principal Secretary to Chief Minister of Gujarat (2003-2006), etc. In his first tenure in Govt. of India, he worked as Director in Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion during 1994 to 1999.

IAS officer Rajiv Kumar of 1984 batch is the Financial Services Secretary. Ajay Narayan Jha is Expenditure Secretary and Neeraj Kumar Gupta Secretary, DIPAM. Both are 1982 batch IAS officers.

Subhash Chandra Garg, a 1983 batch IAS officer, is Economic Affairs Secretary.
