New Delhi, November 7: When demonetization was announced, preventing terror funding was one of the prime goals behind the decision. As National Investigation Agency (NIA) has seized demonetized currency worth Rs 36.3 crore in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) terror funding case, again it has been proved why the move was necessary. Nine persons have also been arrested in the case.

Even after one year of demonetization, some people who have a connection with separatists and terrorists possessed demonetized currency as they could not deposit or convert it within given time period. After founding it NIA had arrested the persons. While seven of them were arrested near Connaught Place in New Delhi, others were caught later.

NIA has arrested Pradeep Chauhan, Bhagwan Singh, Vinod Shetty, Shahnawaz Mir, Deepak Toprani, Majid Sofi, Ejazul Hasan, Jaswinder Singh, and Umair Dar. This comes as a successful result of ongoing probes into the funding of militancy in the state. The arrested 9 people will be produced in NIA court on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 9.70 lakh have been sized from along the India- Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Malda district. Malda has a bad reputation for currency related cases. It was even called “fake currency capital” of the country.

"A total of 485 fake notes of Rs 2,000 were seized from Seikh. The face value of the seized currency is Rs 9.70 lakh," senior officer of the border guarding force said Iqramul Seikh said.
