Shillong, November 8: Now you don’t need to fly to Japan or US for Cherry Blossom festival as India is hosting its own. The natural diversity of India makes this country incredible and distinct from other countries. While several countries observe Cherry Blossom festival in spring, India is the only country having an autumn Cherry Blossom festival. In Shillong, The Government of Meghalaya kick-started the 2nd India International Cherry Blossom Festival on Wednesday. Along with the boost in tourism, the aim of the festival is to protect and preserve the forest and wildlife biodiversity.

The Festival is being held in association with the Institute of Bioresources & Sustainable Development (IBSD), Government of India and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India. Meghalaya’s Environment and Forest Minister Clement Marak was the chief guest at the inaugural session. “By celebrating Cherry Blossom we are celebrating nature,” said Marak. He released the special cover of the 2nd India International Cherry Blossom Festival Postage Stamp.

The State Government is focusing on promoting tourism potential of the State by organizing such festivals which not only boost tourism but also projects the positive image of the State. Meghalaya is the first in the world to celebrate autumn Cherry Blossom Festival based on local cherry trees which bloom uniquely in the State.

Countries like Japan, USA, Switzerland, and Korea celebrate Cherry Blossom Festival and have established intercontinental friendship through the festival. Hence Meghalaya also expects international recognition in near future.
