Mary Kom cruises to finals of Asian boxing championship

Hanoi, November 8: The five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medalist M C Mary Kom on Tuesday swiftly progressed to the finals of the Asian women's Boxing Championships being held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Mary will next face North Korea's Kim Hyang Mi in the final on Wednesday.

 

Mary Kom continuing her good form in the Asian women's Boxing Championships defeated Japan's Tsubasa Komura in a unanimous 5-0 verdict to make the summit clash for the fifth time in her six appearances at the event. Mary Kom showcased her tremendous defensive techniques against Tsubasa Komura and registered an easy win.

After getting past into the finals, Mary Kom said, “I am happy to be in the finals in my first comeback tournament itself. It was a tough fight and now I have to get ready for the final.” If Mary wins the final, it will be her first Asian gold medal in the 48-kilogram category.



Five other Indians settled for bronze medals at the Asian women's Boxing Championships after losing their respective semi-final bouts in different weight categories. They are former world champion L Sarita Devi in the 64-kilogram category, Priyanka Chaudhary in the 60-kilogram category, Lovlina Borgohain in 69-kilogram category, Seema Punia in the plus 81kilogram category and Shiksha in the 54-kilogram category.
