California, November 08: After months of speculation, Twitter has finally increased the character limit for tweets to 280. The move is said to be an attempt to draw more users onto the micro-blogging site. The doubled character limit is available across all languages except Japanese, Korean, and Chinese since they didn’t have space limitation issues.

The decision was motivated by research carried out by the social network that showed you can convey double the amount of information per character in languages like Japanese, Korean and Chinese than you can in languages like English, Spanish, Portuguese or French.

San Francisco-based Twitter said, the new limit, a major shift for the messaging platform known for its 140-character tweets, aims to address a major cause of frustration for many users. Twitter Chief executive Jack Dorsey said, this is a small change, but a big move for them.

In a blog post, the company’s product manager Aliza Rosen wrote “We and many of you – were concerned that timelines may fill up with 280 character tweets, and people with the new limit would always use up the whole space. But that didn’t happen.”

"As a result, your timeline reading experience should not substantially change, you’ll still see about the same amount of tweets in your timeline.”

"In addition to more tweeting, people who had more room to tweet received more engagement, got more followers, and spent more time on Twitter. People in the experiment told us that a higher character limit made them feel more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, their ability to find good content, and Twitter overall."
