Mogadishu, November 8: Piracy at sea off the coast Somalia is a real terror in the region. Whereas the threat of piracy got weaker in last few years, the issue has again emerged from the starting of 2017. Against this backdrop, United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on Tuesday to condemn the acts of piracy and armed robbery at sea off the coast. The organization has also called for a comprehensive response to prevent and suppress such acts and tackle their underlying causes.

The council has urged Somalia to continue accelerating the passing of comprehensive anti-piracy and maritime laws. This step will help to establish security forces with clear roles. When jurisdictions will be able to enforce these laws, Somali courts can easily investigate such cases and prosecute those responsible for piracy.

Member states of the council have been requested to work along with international law. To make the prosecution of criminals stronger, council has urged to member states to criminalize piracy under their domestic law

The Security Council also called upon the UN Member States, “working in conjunction with relevant international organizations, to adopt legislation to facilitate prosecution of suspected pirates off the coast of Somalia.”
