Brussels, November 9: As a result of escalating conflict between EU and Russia NATO has decided to carry out its biggest expansion in the decade. On Wednesday, NATO defense ministers decided to open two new military headquarters for better protection in Europe. It also wants to sharpen its focus on the cyber operation.

The main aim of the new expansion is to respond more quickly to threats in Europe. The defense ministers also agreed to create an Atlantic command and a logistics command. In Post-cold war era, the relation between Russia and EU has reached highest tensions currently. Hence to counter that, NATO is taking those moves.

“This is vital for our transatlantic alliance,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told a news conference. “It is about how to move forces across the Atlantic and how to move forces across Europe,” he added. “Those decisions will ensure that NATO continues to adapt for the 21st century so that we can keep our people safe in a more challenging world,” he said to ministers in the meeting.

In September Russia conducted war games where a mass number of forces gathered. Though Russia said it had no other intention than joint exercise but NATO was clearly not convinced. Hence this also worked as a catalyst for this decision.
