PM Modi, 1st Prime Minister to visit Philippines since 1981; will attend India-ASEAN summit

New Delhi, November 9: After taking his charge in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has undertaken several important foreign visits boosting India’s position in international politics. Again to deepen relation with countries in Asia-Pacific region, Prime Minister will travel to the Philippines on November 12 to attend the 15th Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) India summit and the 12th East Asia Summit in Manila on November 14.He will be the 1st Indian Prime Minister to visit Philippines after 1981.

"With this visit to Philippines, India would have undertaken visits at the highest level of our President, Vice-President and Prime Minister to all ASEAN countries in the last three years," the secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Preeti Saran, said on Thursday. This development indicates the amount of importance Indian government holds to its relation with the ASEAN region.

In 2014, PM Modi initiated act east policy at the India-ASEAN summit. This visit will enhance the relation more as Prime Minister will meet the President of Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte. The leaders will have a bilateral meeting. During the summit, issues related to the bilateral trade and investments will also be discussed.

"The prime minister's visit takes place in a landmark year as we are celebrating 25 years of India-ASEAN dialogue partnership, 15 years of Summit level participation and five years of our strategic partnership with the ASEAN," Preeti Saran said.
