Saina Nehwal beats Sindhu, HS Prannoy defeats Kidambi Srikanth to clinch National titles

Nagpur, November 9: The former World No. 1 Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy on Wednesday registered a thrilling over their opponent and bagged the Senior Badminton National Championship title. Notably, Saina Nehwal defeated Rio Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu while HS Prannoy registered a victory over Kidambi Srikanth in the summit clash of Senior Badminton National Championship that was held in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

 

Saina Nehwal outclassed P V Sindhu with a straight-sets victory by 21-17, 27-25 in the finals that lasted for just under an hour. Saina, who is currently ranked World No. 11 won the first game 21-17 with ease. However, in the second set PV Sindhu fought hard and tried to make a comeback but Saina proved superior and clinched the thrilling clash by 27-25.

Saina entered the women's singles final of the tournament after defeating fifth seed Anura Prabhudesai 21-11 21 -10. After winning the title, Saina Said, "I am surprised with the way I played today. I moved well and picked Sindhu's difficult shots."


Meanwhile, in the men's singles final, Hyderabad's HS Prannoy defeated Kidambi Srikanth to clinch the title. Second seed HS Prannoy, who achieved a career-best World No. 11 ranking last week, saw off top seed World No 2 Kidambi Srikanth 21-15, 16-21, 21-7 in a 49-minute battle to win the men's singles title in the 82nd edition of the tournament.


On the other side, Ashwini Ponnappa claimed two titles in the tournament by clinching the mixed doubles with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and women's doubles with N Sikki Reddy. Interestingly, Saina has now played the nationals three times and lifted the trophy each time.
