Japan to see first Imperial abdication in 200 years; Emperor Akihito will step down in next April
Tokyo, December 1: Japan will experience first Imperial abdication in about 200 years in 2019. The date has been set 30th April 2019 for Emperor Akihito’s abdication. The emperor will step down from the Chrysanthemum Throne beginning a new era, which is yet unnamed. Akihito's elder son Crown Prince Naruhito will succeed him.
"I feel deeply moved that the decision was made smoothly by the Imperial House Council, marking a major step toward an imperial succession," Japan PM Abe said. "We would like everyone to celebrate an abdication of the emperor and succession of the crown prince," Japan’s Chief cabinet secretary Suga said.
The abdication created controversy across the country. As per the 1947 Imperial House Law, an old rule, abdication was not allowed. The last abdication was back in 1817. Emperor Akihito in a video message in last year expressed his concern over his declining fitness and continuation of duty. After the video went viral, it was interpreted as his wish to step down but then abdication was not allowed.
