A rare diplomatic visit ends as UN political chief departs from North Korea

Pyongyang, December 10: Jeffrey Feltman, United Nations political affairs chief ended his rare visit to North Korea amid rising of tension in Korean Peninsula. Though UN did not make any official statement of the visit as per local reports, it pledged to support to bring down the tension and create a more relaxed situation. He also mentioned urgent need to prevent miscalculations and open channels to reduce the risks of conflict.

In September, North Korea asked UN to send an official for a policy dialogue. The rare visit came after almost six years as North Korea recently launched a powerful missile which could hit the entire US mainland and the situation got worse in the region. The top official did not meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as UN Chief Guterres said.

“The United Nations expressed concerns over the heightened situation on the Korean peninsula and expressed willingness to work on easing tensions on the Korean peninsula in accordance with the U.N. Charter which is based on international peace and security,” North Korea’s state-run news agency, KCNA said.

Feltman had a series of meetings with North Korean Foreign Minister RI Yong Ho and other top officials. They exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula and agreed that the current situation was the most tense and dangerous peace and a security issue in the world today. The officials also agreed to “regular communication”.

The UN official emphasized the need for the full implementation of all relevant Security Council resolutions. He also said there can only be a diplomatic solution to the situation, achieved through a process of sincere dialogue.
