Paris, December 11: After two years of historic Paris agreement, world leaders are again meeting in a summit, called One Planet Summit with the goal of fast forwarding action on climate change. The leaders are coming together to reaffirm commitment as well as to mobilize the scale of financing.

The One Planet Summit aims to mobilize new announcements of bold projects and substantial financial commitments to combat climate change. The Summit will also showcase successful initiatives that can be scaled up with the right kind of support.

Understanding the urgency of Climate change action, one hundred and seventy countries have already ratified the Paris Agreement, which came into force in less than a year. Many nations have drawn up and are now moving to implement their national climate action plans under the Paris Agreement.

“This year’s barrage of climate disasters showed that poor communities are often completely unprepared to deal with extreme weather. They need real help; from sea walls to protect against rising sea levels to sustainable water sources that won’t go dry during a drought. The last thing they need is pricey loans that will saddle them with interest payments for years to come,” Armelle Le Comte, Oxfam France’s climate change policy lead said.

India’s ultra-mega solar project will also be put on the discussion panel at the One Planet Summit, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has said. “I am very optimistic about what could happen with renewable energy (in India),” Kim told.

Climate change is the biggest environmental challenge of our time. It is already affecting our climate, agriculture, native ecosystems, infrastructure, health and biosecurity. If left unchecked it will have broad social and economic impacts.
