Riyadh, December 12: Adding one more surprising move to the list of latest social reforms in Saudi Arabia, the country will allow public cinemas to open for the first time in 35 years. The powerful Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman is taking the country towards a more modern social system by taking revolutionary steps.

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Culture and Information Awwad bin Saleh Alawwad said that opening cinemas will act as a catalyst for economic growth and diversification. With the help of a broader cultural sector, the country will create new employment and training opportunities. In addition to that, obviously, the countrymen will get a new source of entertainment to rejuvenate them.

The expected time of the opening of the movie theatre is 2018’s March. The licensing process for cinema operators will start within 90 days. The government expects to open more than 300 cinemas with more than 2,000 screens by 2030.

The films will be subject to censorship according to media policy standards of the kingdom. The censorship will observe that the films remain "in line with values and principles in place and do not contradict with Sharia Laws and moral values in the kingdom."
